Mary Quite Contrary

Maria lives and works in London, where she is currently studying an MA in Illustration at Camberwell College of Arts. Prior to studying her MA, Maria’s academic background also includes a degree from Central Saint Martins where she studied printmaking. She is also a part-time lecturer of Art and Design in a further education college. Throughout the years Maria has always strived to maintain the balance between digital and hand-made elements within her pictures as well as combine naturalistic and surreal aspects within her artwork. She enjoys exploring the removal of an image from its original context and altering its meaning and existence. Within her work the recycling of second hand imagery and the restoration of the found, faded and broken image have also become concepts of great interest. Her growing interest in the art of picture books and the light and dark atmosphere of fairytales, folktales and nursery rhymes has been employed in her most recent work which explores the narrative themes based on modern-day fairytales and nursery rhymes.
